Fairfield Energy - 2 Paint Coat System

As part of the two year contract with Fairfield Energy, BIS Salamis worked closely with Amec, the duty holder for the Dunlin assets to engineer fit for purpose coating solutions and update the fabric maintenance specifications, resulting in labour savings as well as health and safety benefits.

Work Scopes

The contract required BIS Salamis to provide Fairfield Energy with a full spectrum of fabric maintenance services, including a range of fabric maintenance, scaffolding, insulation and painting services as well as fireproofing, NDT inspection technicians and industrial cleaning experts. In addition, specific project requirements such as the Dunlin Planned Shutdown, which involved the cleaning and de-sanding of seven large vessels.

Overcoming Challenges

BIS Salamis had to assess critical path work scopes with regard to coating durations and provide effective solutions for reducing man-hours and materials cost. The team also had to identify effective solutions for reducing man-hours and material costs.

Innovative Solutions

After consultation and careful analysis of the products available, BIS Salamis sourced a 2 coat paint system that met with the design specification criteria. This offered significant benefits over the traditional 4 coat process.

  • Cost/time savings: Compared to traditional methods, investment in man-hours was reduced by 40%, with an additional 40% saving on material costs with no impact on specification.
  • Safety: This 2-coat, solvent free alternative system had significant health and safety advantages, including reduced exposure for employees involved in confined space working.

Key Benefits

By recommending the use of the 2-coat system, BIS Salamis was able to complete the project ahead of schedule, limiting down time and cost associated with the fabric maintenance activities despite the poor ambient weather conditions. This project showcases the expertise of the team, range of services and integrated solutions that BIS Salamis can provide for large specialist projects such as this, driving further drive productivity and cost efficiency.
